SUMMARY:History of mathematics talk: on Newton’s mathematics
DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately this event has now been cancelled due to unforseen circumstances.     Professor Antoni Malet, who is visiting from Barcelona, will provide an outline of Newton’s most consequential contributions to 17th-century mathematics, paying particular attention to his style and the methodological tenets that shaped his mathematical work. He will discuss the issue of the appropriation of Newton’s mathematics on the Continent, a matter much distorted by the reverberations of the Newton-Leibniz priority quarrel. In particular he will dwell on Newton's approach to symbolisation and will contrast it with other contemporary approaches. The talk will be in Lecture Theatre C, Mathematical Institute. https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/on-newtons-mathematics-with-special-attention-to-his-notations-history-of-mathematics-talk/
