Why do academics publish (the way that they do)? Inaugural Lecture by Professor Aileen Fyfe, School of History

About Professor Fyfe's Lecture

Should the results of research be published as quickly as possible – or not until they have been carefully scrutinised? Should research results be freely available to everyone – or accessible only to those who can pay? The current pandemic has demonstrated that these questions matter to us all.

In her Inaugural Lecture, Professor Aileen Fyfe of the School of History discusses the history of scientific journals to explain why academic publishing has its own distinct traditions and practices; and she asks whether those practices remain fit-for-purpose in the twenty-first century.
