War, destruction and reform: the early years of Mary, Queen of Scots

Mary, Queen of Scots: icon, martyr, national obsession. You know her story, but what does she hide?

In December 1542, Mary became Queen at six days old. For the next eight years, Scotland was subject to violent warfare with England over her future marriage.

This exhibition is not just about Mary: come along to explore the effect of the wars on ordinary people and the long-lasting impact of this violence. Discover history repeating itself, and what Scotland's most famous monarch hides about life in her times.

The exhibition is based on research by Dr Amy Blakeway from the School of History and supported by a Royal Society of Edinburgh Personal Research Fellowship.

Among the varied objects on display there are some exciting items on loan from Aberdeen City Council (Aberdeen Archives, Gallery & Museums), the British Library, Dundee Art Galleries and Museums, Dundee City Archives, East Lothian Council Archives, Edinburgh City Archives, the National Library of Scotland, National Museums Scotland, National Records of Scotland, and Perth and Kinross Archives.

A varied programme of events, including family events, accompanies the exhibition.
