The error behind everything we see: an afternoon of poetry with Julio Martínez Mesanza Free
Born in Madrid in 1955, Julio Martínez Mesanza is one of the most prominent poets writing in Spain today. His work includes four successive editions of a single, expanding collection titled Europa (Europe, 1983 to 1990), three further books of poetry: Las trincheras (The Trenches, 1996), Entre el muro y el foso (Between the Wall and the Ditch, 2007), and Gloria (The Glory, 2016), for which he received Spain's National Poetry Award in 2017, a volume of selected poems, Soy en mayo (I Am in May, 2007), and a collection of miscellaneous prose, La calle de la reina Ester (Queen Esther's Street, 2017).
He has also translated, among other works, Dante's La Vita Nuova and Jacopo Sannazaro's Arcadia. Marked by exquisite and spellbinding formal beauty, his poetry draws on history and classical sources to offer a moral meditation on the human condition that feels both timeless and deeply contemporary.
In a rare visit to Scotland, generously supported by the Consulate General of Spain in Edinburgh, the author will read a selection of his poems and discuss his work with Javier Letran from the Department of Spanish in the School of Modern Languages.
All are welcome, but please book a free ticket as spaces are limited. The event will be conducted in Spanish.
