Taking care of ourselves in order to take care of the world A free workshop on climate emotions led by Professor Joan Gavaler
This free workshop on climate emotions at the St Andrews Botanic Garden is hosted by the School of Geography and Sustainable Development and will be led by Professor Joan Gavaler, Artistic Director of Aura CuriAtlas Physical Theatre and a Professor of Dance at the college of William & Mary, Virginia, USA.
The workshop uses contemplation, movement and writing to process our responses to climate change and connect to the present moment. What personal and communal strength can we access to face the realities of climate change? Gathering a critical mass of people toward healing action is an ongoing challenge. Through this workshop we will embody the process of being present to care for ourselves, other people, and the world when things fall apart.
As a choreographer and director, Joan has created 85 original works and has been a driving force behind four performing companies. She has worked with poets, visual artists, composers, musicians, actors, directors, acrobats, psychologists, geographers, physicists and neuroscientists on dance and theatre projects and has been invited by more than 80 organisations to present and teach in the US, Europe and Asia. Joan uses her experience with dance, theatre, Contact Improvisation, Alexander Technique and other somatic approaches to lead guided movement experiences and collaborative interaction to support healing and the creative process.
The event is free and open to all. The workshop will run from 12.30pm to 1.30pm, followed by a free lunch from 1.30pm to 2pm. Please book a free place through the Eventbrite link and let us know your sandwich preference from the choices provided.
