Screening: Destinies of Women (Slatan Dudow, 1952) Fokus Films from Germany and the German Screen Studies Network - Free

To celebrate ten years of FOKUS: Films from Germany, Goethe Institut Glasgow has invited guest curator Rastko Novakovic to present his selection of features under the festival theme Women: words and worlds.

Colleagues from the Department of German and the Department of Film Studies are showing three of these films in collaboration with the German Screen Studies Network and its co-directors, Dora Osborne (German) and Paul Flaig (Film Studies):

  • Destinies of Women (Slatan Dudow, 1952)
  • The Drifter (Tatjana Turanskyj, 2010)

Destinies of Women (Slatan Dudow, 1952) was once controversial and is now a classic. This East German film depicts four women's search for happiness in divided Berlin. The film was made by the same collaborative team behind the Weimar radical film Kuhle Wampe (1932), including composer Hanns Eisler, director Slatan Dudow and playwright Bertolt Brecht. The screening will be introduced by Dora Osborne.
