School of Economics and Finance Seminar Pregnancy Loss: Stress, Investment, and Subsequent Children

Speaker: Dr Orla Doyle, University College Dublin

Abstract: Pregnancy loss is often traumatic, although unacknowledged, event which may alter prenatal investment in subsequent pregnancies. Using Norwegian registry data, we exploit the random nature of single, early miscarriages to examine the impact of pregnancy loss on maternal investment and the outcomes of parents and subsequent children. Pregnancy loss improves maternal health investments regarding supplement use and smoking, but there are limited effects on children. These findings suggest that long-term support may be required to mitigate negative effects arising from prenatal shocks such as pregnancy loss.
