School of Chemistry Colloquium: Professor Andrew Goodwin (Oxford University) Disorder by design

School of Chemistry Colloquium open to final year project students, MSc students, PhD students, post-doctoral researchers and academic staff.

This talk will explore some of the ways in which we, as chemists, might
controllably introduce disorder in materials design. While disorder is
often considered detrimental to various physical properties, we are
particularly interested in cases where the reverse is true – i.e. where
disorder of a special type is actually important for some particular
function of interest. We will illustrate this point with a few examples
drawn from our own work on battery materials, metal–organic frameworks,
and frustrated magnets.
