Plastic Free St Andrews

Join colleagues at the launch of Plastic Free St Andrews, a local initiative that aims to make St Andrews the first Scottish town to go single-use plastic free.

The University, in partnership with Transition University of St Andrews, Surfers Against Sewage and St Andrews Environmental Network, has established the initiative to reduce single-use plastics in St Andrews. The multi-stakeholder scheme aims to spread awareness for the increasingly urgent environmental issues caused by single-use plastics.

The UK alone generates an estimated five million tonnes of plastic waste annually, around 40 per cent of which ends up in landfill. Plastic bottles, cutlery, straws and plastic bags are a few of the main culprits. The town-wide Plastic Free St Andrews partnership aims to reduce reliance on these single-use products by engaging with as many organisations, companies and individuals as possible.

The free launch event will take place at the Fife Council offices on St Mary's Place (next to the Students Union) in St Andrews. There will be presentations, advice, children's activities and more on reducing personal and community-wide use of single-use plastics. For more information, visit the Facebook event page.
