Paywall: The Business of Scholarship Movie screening followed by panel discussion

Paywall: The Business of Scholarship is a documentary that focuses on the need for open access to research and science, questioning the rationale behind the US$25.2 billion a year that flows into for-profit academic publishers, a substantial proportion of this from public funding (tax payers). It examines the 35 to 40% profit margin associated with the top academic publishers, such as Elsevier; a profit margin often greater than some of the most profitable tech companies, e.g., Apple, Facebook and Google.

The screening will be followed by a panel session debating the issues raised, and welcoming contributions from the audience. The panel will be chaired by Assistant Vice-Principal for Collections and Digital Content, Dr Katie Stevenson.

The event is free but please book tickets on the Byre Theatre website.
