New light on Scotland's best preserved city walls: Stirling Dr Murray Cook, Stirling Council Archaeologist

Famously, Stirling has always had Scotland's best preserved city walls, but their nature and character has been coloured by the last siege of Stirling in January 1746 against the Jacobites.

At this point the walls had collapsed, and the absence of a northern circuit allowed them to be dismissed as a panicky response to the aftermath of the Battle of Pinkie in 1547.

New research by Dr Murray Cook and Dominic Farrugia demonstrates that the walls were built earlier to cutting edge Italian renaissance design and are of international significance.
