Ness of Brodgar: 1000 years in the making --- 20 years of discovery
St Andrews Archaeology Society 2025 Mitford Lecture
This year marks the centenary of the discovery of the original Brodgar stone, a beautifully decorated slab, discovered during ploughing in 1925. We are honoured to have Nick Card, director of the Ness of Brodgar excavations as our 2025 Mitford lecturer.
The Brodgar stone was almost forgotten for 80 years but excavation over the last 20 years has revealed the remarkable site that it was a part of and the wider World Heritage Site, the Heart of Neolithic Orkney. The dig has revealed a large, multi-phased, complex of monumental structures spanning the whole of the Neolithic period.
Nick's talk will explore the rediscovery of the site, its excavation, the finds, and what the future holds in store for this remarkable site.
