Mary Pickford night: silent film with live music

One hundred years ago, the art of film was rapidly reaching dizzy heights of innovation and sophistication. Film was also significantly associated with women, not only as actors but as producers, scriptwriters, and directors. In Hollywood, perhaps no one epitomised female power as much as Mary Pickford, a huge star with her own production company. Pickford plays the lead in Daddy Long-Legs (Marshal Neilan, 1919), a wonderful bitter-sweet comedy which ideally showcases her persona. Sassy, strong, rebellious and independent, Mary Pickford tells us a lot about women's strength in the 1910s and 1920s, and indeed about female presence in early cinema.

Come and enjoy this film in the way it was meant to be experienced: with live musical accompaniment. It will be composed and performed for us by expert silent film musician Dr Steve Gellatly. The film will be shown in a beautiful restored print. This is an absolute must for anyone interested in film history.
