It Stops Here: Standing up for Our Lands, Our Waters, and Our People An afternoon with Indigenous Land Defender, Rueben George (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) - Free
ATLAS Arts, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, and the University of St Andrews present an afternoon with Rueben George (Tsleil-Waututh First Nation). Rueben is a prominent Indigenous land defender and Sun Dance Chief who spent much of the last decade fighting the Trans Mountain Pipeline, which transports crude bitumen through his nation's territory (where Vancouver, BC, Canada is today).
He is author of the national best-selling book It Stops Here: Standing up for Our Lands, Our Waters, and Our People (co-authored with Michael Simpson, Lecturer in the School of Geography and Sustainable Development at St Andrews).
Join us for an afternoon discussion with Rueben on the themes of the sacred connection of the Tsleil-Waututh people to their lands and waters, and how they are drawing on their culture to heal and stand up to the ongoing colonization of their people by the state and extractive industries. Following a talk by Rueben, we will share some food and then go for a walk to discuss how energy infrastructures are impacting culturally significant sites here on Skye.
13h00 — 14h00: Talk by Rueben George (Tsleil-Waututh Nation)
14h00 — 14h30: Soup and Pudding in the Hall (food contributions for sharing are welcomed)
14h30 — 16h00: Walk out on the land (come prepared to be outside)
