Inaugural Furgol Lecture --- Professor Julia Barrow (Leeds) Training young clerics: school experiences in north-western Europe c.1050-c.1150

The School of History is delighted to welcome you to the Inaugural Furgol Lecture, followed by a drinks reception in Lower College Hall.

Professor Julia Barrow (Leeds) will deliver the lecture ‘Training young clerics: school experiences in north-western Europe c.1050-c.1150'.

Education was essential for young clerics, who were expected to be literate, and schools formed an integral feature of cathedrals, and often also collegiate churches. However, it was also possible to attend a monastic school in preparation for a clerical career.

How did the experiences of boys intended for clerical careers change over the period c.1050-c.1150 which saw rising numbers of schools and the early development of higher schools? How important were family connections in exploring new (or older) educational opportunities? What do we learn from the differences between the forms of education offered to girls and boys?
