Film Studies Speaker Series: "Exotic Configurations: Japanese Game Machine Design in the 1990s" Daniel Johnson (William & Mary)

“The 1990s saw a rise in ‘exotic architecture' in video game consoles produced in Japan. This term refers to the use of specialized components and programming requirements across devices. Focusing on the Sega Saturn game machine, this presentation will discuss the trend toward “exotic architecture” alongside wider currents in technological specialization in Japan in the 1990s (sometimes called “Galapagos Syndrome”) and the growing role of animation in shaping how people interacted with and understood the expanding world of new media at the turn of the millennium.”
