The Laidlaw Music Centre and the Byre Theatre present Byre Opera: Pelleas and Melisande by Claude Debussy in a new translation by Janice Galloway and with a new chamber orchestration by Matthew Rooke, conducted by Michael Downes and led by Lucy Russell, and design by Janis Hart.

Byre Opera returns to the live stage with its first production since 2019, and the first to be staged at the new Laidlaw Music Centre in St Andrews. The production welcomes Kally Lloyd-Jones back to the Byre Opera fold as director. Now Joint Director of the Byre Theatre, Kally directed the first Byre Operas in 2010 and 2012.

The story of Pelleas and Melisande is a tragic love triangle. Prince Golaud finds Melisande, a mysterious young woman, lost in a forest. They marry and the Prince brings his new bride back to his grandfather's castle where Melisande becomes increasingly attached to his younger half-brother Pelleas, arousing Golaud's jealousy.
