Ballet 'The Goldfish': revival of the 19th Century 'Russianness' in New York Hybrid research seminar by Takaaki Iwai - Free
This seminar, presented by Takaaki Iwai, will look into the image of Russia by émigré artists and its perception by the Western audience in the ballet The Goldfish, which was premiered in 1937 in New York by the Mordkin Ballet Company.
The ballet's story is based on a tale by Alexander Pushkin, with the music composed by Nikolai Tcherepnin (1873 to 1945), a leading Russian composer, and the stage set designed by Sergei Sudeikin (1882 to 1946), a former member of the dominant artist group Mir Iskusstva (World of Art). An interdisciplinary approach will be taken, analysing sources such as the music score, photographs of the performance and newspaper review articles. This aims to understand the unsung Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) by artists from Russia in the US.
